(Abkürzung: PR): Bezeichnung für die Pflege der Beziehungen zwischen einem Auftragsgeber und einer für ihn wichtigen Öffentlichkeit. Durch PR wird versucht (meist unter Berufung auf sichtbare Leistungen), in der Öffentlichkeit ein Klima des Einverständnisses und Vertrauens zu schaffen, das den Unternehmen oder Organisationen förderlich ist; PR werden nicht nur von Unternehmen, sondern auch von Verbänden (Lobby), Behörden (Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit) und Parteien (Vertrauensarbeit) betrieben.
 
Begriff und Methoden der PR sind nicht fest umrissen. Im Gegensatz zur Werbung sind PR nicht unmittelbar am Verkauf von Gütern oder Dienstleistungen interessiert, sondern setzen vielmehr sogar außerhalb des ökonomischen Bereichs an, beispielsweise durch die Förderung kultureller, wissenschaftlicher oder künstlerischer Interessen (Sponsoring). Von der Propaganda sind PR abzugrenzen, da sie weder versuchen jemanden zu überreden noch gar einen Druck auszuüben.
 
Den PR entsprechen bei Unternehmen und Organisationen im Innenverhältnis die Human Relations.
